[First Year 4/6] Nothing Learned

Damien sat in the library alone, mountains of books sitting on the table before him. At a single glance, the books had no correlation with one another. With such books as 'Greatest and Strangest Wizards of the Ages' and 'Lost Arts of Magic' and even '101 Moste Foul Tragedies', it seemed as if he was just looking up topics that interested him.

But if someone knew the contents of the books well, they would realize there was one similarity. Some of the stranger wizards of the first books were empaths. Lost Arts of Magic had some magical arts that weren't quite dead but perhaps were frowned upon, or a few people were born with that art, such as Empaths and Seers. And 101 Moste Foul Tragedies had many tragedies involving Empaths who had gone Insane.

So people who truly knew Damien, so far of which there was one, would realize that he was researching his friend Echo. To an outsider, he was obsessing over his learning of new things. Acting the Ravenclaw.

It was during his research that Verin Dysmas, a fellow Ravenclaw, came up to him. The boy swaggered over to his table before sitting opposite him. Damien halted his reading to lift his eyes up to the boy, waiting for him to speak.

"Damien, right?" Verin smiled politely, though Damien couldn't help but compare it to an animal baring its teeth before a confrontation. At Damien's nod, Verin continued to speak, "I thought so. My name is Verin, a Ravenclaw like you."

"I know," he answered warily. Most people didn't particularly care for Damien for some reason or other. Either he was poor, with second-hand clothes. Or there was some disappointment in their eyes that he couldn't figure out what from. But he couldn't get a single bead on this other boy. It was almost like he was putting on a fake front for some reason he couldn't understand.

"Ah, right," the boy continued on, "You've probably seen me around the common room. Well, I felt I should introduce myself since we'll probably be seeing each other around a lot."

Verin nodded at the books, placing his forearms on the table with his hands intertwined. "Light reading or studying?"

Damien was caught off guard for a moment before shrugging halfheartedly, "I like learning."

The other boy let out a chuckle, "You'll fit in quite well in our house then. If you're looking up something in particular, would you like help? Two heads are better than one, after all."

Damien shook his head adamantly. He wasn't sure if Echo would like him even mentioning the subject to someone else, given how personal it was to her. It was her life, after all. "I think I'll be fine. This is therapeutic anyway."

With a puzzled look, the boy nodded, "If you wish. But if you need any help at all, just ask. I have a feeling we could be great friends."

With that, the boy got up from his seat and walked around the corner, leaving Damien only with the thought that perhaps his first impressions were wrong.

  1. This character didn't originally exist. More specifically, he did exist, but was vastly different, so he might as well be a different person. Originally he was a friend of Damien and Echo's (then called Rayne) who ran away later on. What purpose will he serve now? Well you'll find out soon enough.
